What did you do when you had a “bad dream” when you were a child? No matter how old we are, we sometimes have nightmares. When we were children, still unaware of so many aspects of life, nightmares could be very frightening because we were less equipped to deal with the fear they caused. When I was a child, my mother would comfort and reassure me after I woke from a nightmare. She also taught me to pray in those moments in the middle of the night when I was afraid. I remember laying in the dark saying the prayers that I had memorized and sung the reassuring hymns that I knew. Even today, when I am occasionally startled awake by an unexpected nightmare, I pray and recall the hymns from my childhood. Cheerful songs about Jesus and the Holy Spirit filled my head, and peace slowly returns. 

Fear hangs in the air in the dark upper room where the apostles are gathered after the death of Jesus. For them, the nightmare has lingered. Jesus’ arrest and brutal execution have filled them with fear and stifled their hopes for the kind of salvation they imagined. They could find no hymn to sing or prayer to offer. They had allowed themselves to be overcome by fear.

But Jesus, filled with love and mercy, wanted to lead them out of their fears and anxieties. Jesus seeks out the apostles amid their fears and gives them the gift of peace. Once their fears are dispelled, and God’s abiding peace is in their hearts, they are sent forth, filled with the Holy Spirit, to share the Good News. That same dynamic is present every time we celebrate the Eucharist. We come to Mass as we are, perhaps distracted, anxious, or weighed down by fears, losses, and hurts. Jesus, seeing our struggles, offers us the gift of peace through the Eucharist. We are then sent forth. Sometimes the process is slow and subtle. Sometimes it happens more dramatically. But God is always there, reaching out to us even amid our nightmares.

¿Qué hiciste de niño cuando tuviste una pesadilla? A pesar de la edad, a veces tenemos pesadillas. Cuando éramos niños las pesadillas podían ser muy aterradoras, aún sin darnos cuenta de tantos aspectos de la vida, porque estábamos menos equipados para lidiar con el miedo que causaban. Cuando era niño después de despertar de una pesadilla, mi madre me consolaba y me tranquilizaba. También me enseñó a rezar durante la noche en los momentos cuando tuve miedo. Recuerdo orar de memoria y cantar los reconfortantes himnos que conocía, acostado en la oscuridad. Incluso hoy, cuando de vez en cuando despierto sobresaltado por una pesadilla inesperada, rezo y recuerdo los himnos de mi infancia, cantos alegres de Jesús y del Espíritu Santo, y la paz regresa lentamente.

El miedo vive en el aire entre el cuarto donde están reunidos los apóstoles después de la muerte de Jesús. Para ellos, la pesadilla se ha prolongado. El arresto y la brutal ejecución de Jesús los llenaron de miedo sofocando las esperanzas de la salvación que imaginaban. No pudieron cantar ningún himno ni ofrecer una oración; se habían dejado vencer por el miedo.

Pero Jesús, lleno de amor y misericordia, quiso saciar sus ansiedades y miedo. Jesús busca a los apóstoles en medio de sus temores y les da el don de la paz. Una vez que la paz permanente de Dios está en sus corazones y pierden el temor, son enviados llenos del Espíritu Santo a compartir las buenas noticias. Esta dinámica está presente cada vez que celebramos la Eucaristía. Llegamos a Misa distraídos, ansiosos, o abrumados, miedosos, perdidos y heridos. Mirando los conflictos, Jesús nos ofrece el don de la paz a través de la Eucaristía y entonces nos envía. A veces, el proceso es lento y sutil. A veces sucede de manera más dramática. Pero Dios siempre está ahí, acercándose a nosotros incluso en medio de nuestras pesadillas.
